The Internet Graveyard is a digital crypt.

It is a website and social media profile archival service that includes a user manual, a set of cards aimed to provoke thoughts worth memorializing, and a webpage tailored to the individual’s digital life. This project originally started out as a tongue-in-cheek answer to the question: What happens to our social media profiles after we die? The short answer is that we can archive them by designating a virtual space that will eventually act as a mausoleum of our digital presences. The reality, however, is much more complicated. Through branding, archiving, and data visualization, The Internet Graveyard is an exploration of death in the digital age.

Many think back to 90s technological designs with fondness. Things like  computers, laptops, websites, music devices, were full of playfulness and felt genuine. I took a lot of inspiration from early Apple user manuals and interface designs, as well as their Hyper-card system.

The Hypercard system is one of Apple iMac’s earliest features where people could input information through hyperlinks in the form of images. For example, when someone clicks on a picture of a pair of headphones, music would play. In the Internet Graveyard, visitors interact with the “grave site” they are visiting by clicking through such hyperlinks in the forms
of objects placed around a blog-like setting.

When visitors to a deceased person’s site first log into their site, the owner can leave them a message.
This example message is written and voiced by my mom.

Riso printed cards with AR codes that places the site owner’s objects around actual space.

This is a user manual detailing all the functions of the website, written from both a user’s and a visitor’s perspective.

A set of cards is also given to each person that registers at The Internet Graveyard. Cards that act as a leeway to cathartic answers worth recording.
